Xiangyang Daily (Zhou Jianchun, the Journalist, and Fu Le, Chen Quanlin, and  Xing Yixing, the Special Correspondents) As April arrives, Rhododendron fortunei flowers on the high mountains over 1,600 meters above sea level at Qianjiaping, Hezuo Village, Xiema Town, Baokang County, Xiangyang, Hubei Province, have entered their peak blooming period. Layers upon layers of flowers bloom like clouds and brocade, painting a brilliant splash of spring across the mountains. The spectacular scenery has drawn numerous photography enthusiasts and tourists, who come to capture the lush spring blossoms on camera.

Rhododendron fortunei is a rare evergreen shrub or small tree species endemic to China. It thrives in cool, humid, and semi-shaded conditions. Tall and robust with a long lifespan, it has a rounded crown and loquat-like leaves. Large, plump flowers cluster at the branch tips, bearing funnel or bell-shaped corollas in vibrant hues. Highly valued for ecological conservation, landscape ornamentation, and scientific research, it is renowned for the poetic description: “Sturdy trunks like pines and cypresses, graceful blooms like peonies.”

It has been reported that this species forms flower buds in July, goes dormant through autumn and winter, and blossoms the following spring. This year’s steady temperature rise, abundant rainfall, and favorable air humidity have created ideal conditions for bud development, resulting in a more than 30 percent increase in total buds compared with previous years.

“The Rhododendron fortunei viewing area in Hezuo Village spans over 5,000 mu. Owing to the warmer-than-average temperatures this year, flowering has commenced approximately one week earlier than usual and is projected to continue through late April,” said Li Shouze, Secretary of the Party Branch of Hezuo Village, who warmly welcomed visitors to come and enjoy the scenery.
