On November 8, Liu Xin, upon exiting Xiangyangdong Railway Station, shared her experience of traveling by high-speed rail with friends over the phone. She remarked, “Taking the high-speed rail from Wuhan to Xiangyang in Hubei Province to attend Angela Zhang (Zhang Shaohan)’s concert takes just over an hour; it is incredibly convenient.”

As a key regional transportation hub, Xiangyangdong Railway Station accommodates a daily passenger flow exceeding 50,000, facilitating connections to over 170 cities nationwide.

Leveraging this “steel artery,” the Dongjin New Area has innovatively developed the “high-speed rail+” model, facilitating the deep integration of high-speed rail with cultural and tourism consumption, innovation aggregation, and industrial upgrading. This initiative promotes the convergence of talent, technology, capital, and other essential factors, transforming transportation advantages into developmental benefits. Consequently, it paves a “golden road” for the high-quality development of Xiangyang’s new urban center.

High-Speed Rail and Cultural Tourism Consumption: Enhancing Intercity Consumer Engagement

The enhancement of transportation convenience has unlocked the potential for cultural and tourism consumption. The Dongjin New Area is leveraging this opportunity to develop an integrated business model known as “concert economy+,” effectively transforming transportation advantages into consumer benefits.

Since the beginning of this year, numerous large-scale cultural and sports events have taken place in the Dongjin New Area, including the “Chinese Dream: Music Festival (Xiangyang Station)” star concert, G.E.M. (Deng Ziqi)’s Xiangyang concert, and Angela Zhang’s Xiangyang concert. These events have significantly heightened fans’ enthusiasm for cross-city performances and generated a consumption effect characterized by the phenomenon that “one performance makes one city popular.”

Data reflects the vitality of consumer activity. From the “Chinese Dream: Music Festival (Xiangyang Station)” star concert in April to G.E.M.’s Xiangyang concert in May, passenger traffic at supermarkets in Dongjin New Area saw a year-on-year increase of 26.97%, while revenue for certain catering establishments surged by as much as 82%. Additionally, the hotel accommodation sector experienced nearly a 50% rise in revenue. In November, Angela Zhang’s Xiangyang concert further invigorated consumption within this area, showcasing the synergistic effect of “high-speed rail and cultural tourism consumption.”

The effective integration of transportation and cultural tourism not only enriches the spiritual and cultural lives of citizens but also positions cultural tourism consumption as a new engine for regional economic growth. This synergy facilitates an efficient transformation from “human flow” to “consumption flow.”

High-Speed Rail and Innovation Integration: Establishing a Hub for Collaborative Development

The “commuting network” established by high-speed rail dismantles regional barriers to the flow of innovative resources, facilitating the optimization and allocation of various assets on a broader scale.

The Dongjin New Area fully capitalizes on the advantages of its high-speed rail hub, accelerates the development of a regional innovation community, and fosters a surge in innovative momentum. Last year, two significant scientific research achievements from Hubei Longzhong Laboratory were successfully implemented and transformed in Xiangyang, directly attracting investments exceeding 10 billion yuan and injecting a “booster” into the technological innovation and industrial economic development of the Dongjin New Area.

The construction of an innovative ecosystem is undergoing rapid acceleration and enhancement. From a distance at Xiangyangdong Railway Station, the construction boom is palpable: new campuses of “Double First-Class” universities, including Wuhan University of Technology and Huazhong Agricultural University, have been established successively, providing a continuous influx of intellectual resources to support urban development. Meanwhile, Tongji Xiangyang Hospital, designated as a national regional medical center, is expediting its construction efforts to ensure that high-quality medical resources are readily accessible.

The arrangement of universities, research institutions, and medical facilities in proximity to high-speed rail hubs fosters an innovative ecosystem characterized by collaborative development among industry, academia, research, and healthcare. This synergy provides robust intellectual support for the region’s high-quality development.

High-Speed Rail and Industrial Upgrading: Expanding Opportunities for High-Quality Development

“The high-speed rail has significantly enhanced business connectivity and logistics efficiency, making it commonplace for out-of-town merchants to visit and return within the same day. This aspect is a crucial factor in our decision to establish the company’s location in Dongjin New Area,” stated Zhao Jing, Executive Director of Chengli Xinfu Xiangyang Automobile Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Chengli Xinfu), emphasizing the convenience afforded by the high-speed rail.

As a prominent manufacturer of specialized vehicles in this area, Chengli Xinfu is dedicated to the production of recreational vehicles and special-purpose vehicles. Since the beginning of this year, the company has achieved sales nearing 300 million yuan, with 350 recreational vehicle orders and production plans scheduled through December. The logistics and business efficiencies facilitated by high-speed rail have become crucial support for the growth of enterprises.

High-speed rail has significantly reduced the distances of time and space, expanding the scope of industrial development. The Dongjin New Area is actively enhancing its industrial support facilities and logistics systems, fostering a deep integration of “high-speed rail and industry.” The efficient transportation network has notably shortened the response cycles of enterprise supply chains, attracting a greater number of high-quality projects to establish themselves in the region. This initiative has facilitated the growth of specialized industrial clusters, such as vehicle manufacturing, and enabled a transformation from being merely a “transportation hub” to becoming an “industrial hub,” thus opening broader opportunities for regional economic development.

The prosperity of transportation fosters the growth of industries, while the strength of hubs enhances regional development. With the ongoing realization of the “high-speed rail economy” effect, the Dongjin New Area is poised to accelerate its transformation into a center for factor aggregation, a hub for industrial upgrading, and a node for regional coordination, scripting a new chapter in its development.
